The painter poured their soul on to the canvas, maybe they felt accomplished because of this and maybe they, just for a moment, felt true beauty. So the idea, no matter how amazing or how profound it is, is a part of a larger system of control. You can talk about intentions all you want but meaning is fixed by society, it was here before you showed up and it will outlast you. No matter what, it's in a language that you inherited. Think about the most profound idea you can. They found Reloaded "unsatisfying" because, by the end of it, you're faced with a portrait that is skeptical of knowledge and purpose. Because rational empiricist types loved the first film for its appreciation of enlightenment. The Matrix Reloaded is about skepticism, it's about how that very enlightenment that Neo fought so hard for is actually just another system of control. He's enlightened and now he can spread his enlightenment to others. Through adversity he wins, he gets love, truth, and purpose all wrapped up with a nice bow. And what does he get for it? He wakes up in a bath of goo soon to discover he's in a fight that, by every apparent sign, seems impossible to win. Neo has to go against every cultural imperative and every predisposition he has, to know the truth. It's about how knowledge is worth the pain and alienation that comes with it. First of all, you can't understand what the Wachowskis are getting at if you don't appreciate Reloaded. I tell people that it's the Seventh Seal or 2001 but really it's The Matrix Reloaded. Even if you only liked the first one as a dumb action movie, the second one delivers just as much, in that capacity. It's a fun action-adventure with thrills, twists, and some comedy. You should absolutely see The Matrix Reloaded.
